Bee keepers want the state to fund a honeybee research lab. Tom Nolan is the President of the State Bee keepers association. He says each year bee keepers lose about 30 percent of their colonies.

“I’ll ask you if you can think of an industry that can survive starting 30 percent in the hole every year,” Nolan says.

Bees are needed to pollinate about a third of the food humans consume. Nolan says’s Florida’s bee industry impacts everything from agriculture to tourism.  And he adds Florida’s climate allows year-round research that can’t be done in most states.
