AARP Florida Supports Second Harvest's Senior Grocery Program

Tom Flanigan

Second Harvest of the Big Bend is starting off the New Year with a healthy $5,000 donation from AARP Florida.

The money will go into the agency’s Senior Grocery Program. During a Wednesday (1/4) media event at Second Harvest’s Tallahassee headquarters, AARP Florida’s Leslie Spencer said many too many older folks face a grim decision every month.

“Sometimes seniors are having to choose between food and prescription drugs and there was a study that showed over 240 prescription drugs increased by about 15.5 percent.”

That’s way beyond the overall inflation rate. Second Harvest CEO Rick Minor said the AARP donation will provide about 700 older Big Bend residents with nutritious food.

“Low-sodium ready-to-eat canned meals, low-fat shelf-stable milk, breakfast cereals, low-fat high-protein meats, and fresh produce and loaf bread when available,” he explained.

Minor added that program distributed the equivalent of nearly 48,000 meals last year to needy seniors in its North Florida service area.
