The Leon County government commemorated the anniversary of 9/11 Thursday with an event honoring community service.

Glenn Winuk worked as a lawyer with the firm Holland Knight and volunteered as a firefighter.  He lost his life responding to the attack at the World Trade Center on 9/11.  Leon County and Holland and Knight officials presented an award named in his honor Thursday to recognize local heroes.  Bob and Mary Rumbley, won this year’s award; they founded a Christian home for men known as CARE.

“Well it means a lot to me because he was a great man that cared a lot about people, and I’m not a great man, but I care a lot about people,” Mr. Rumbley says. “I’m just really honored that we got the award recognizing what we do.”

Award finalist Kylie Foley helped build a tutoring program in Tallahassee’s Joe Louis community.

“I think it’s extremely important, that when something bad happens – something absolutely tragic, and you can’t get more tragic than the events of 9/11 – how do you recover as a country?  How do you recover as a community?  The best way in the face of evil is to say look at all the good we can do,” Foley says.

The event held at Florida State’s college of law was part of the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance started in 2009.

He listens to far too many podcasts and is a die-hard 49ers football fan. When Nick’s not at work he likes to cook, play music and read.
